Thunder Mountain Results for July
6th
Larry Hillis picked up his first career AutoWorks of Ithaca Sportsmen-Modified feature win Sunday night at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Hillis wasted no time in capitalizing on his second row starting spot in taking the lead from Brian White on the second lap. Hillis had to work for his victory as Jim LaRock passed White on lap 8 and settled in to challenge for the lead. LaRock was able to pull next to Hillis on a couple of occasions over the remaining 12 laps but was unable to get by and had to settle for second place. Ray Taylor crossed the line third with invader Joey Colsten finishing fourth and Ed White fifth.
The World Products IMCA Modified Empire Series tour made it's first ever stop and Thunder Mountain Speedway and home track hotshoe Tom Eiklor grabbed his fifth consecutive win at the track. Eiklor needed a little luck to come home with the victory as Jeremy Shaw took the lead from early leader Mike Stoddard and was skillfully working his way through lapped traffic when his fortune turned. Coming off turn four with nine laps remaining Shaw ran into a spinning lapped car bringing out the caution sending Shaw to the back of the pack for the restart and putting Eikor in the lead.
Eiklor lead the remaining laps as current tour point leader Dale Caswell was unable to mount a charge and had to settle for a second place finish. Gary Roberts crossed the line in third place with Chris Fleming fourth and Mark Griffin fifth.
In a race that's certain to be the topic of conversation for years to come Rich Green and Kurt Decker put on a lead swapping duel from the third lap until Decker faded with one lap remaining in the Dart Dirt Pure Stock feature event. Decker slipped by Jason Rhodes for the lead on the third lap. Rich Green followed Decker by the Rhodes car and two laps later Green took command. Green only held on to the lead for three laps when Decker drove past to regain the lead. Both drivers switched grooves throughout the race moving from the outside and then back to the inside looking for any advantage. As the race wore on the drivers continued to swap the lead, sometimes as many as two to three times on the same lap. With the white flag waving Decker's power steering broke and Green went on to take the win. Earl Zimmer nipped Decker on the front stretch to finish second with Decker third, Charlie Gilbert fourth and Mike Wilbur Jr. fifth.
John Hoover led the Road Bandit feature from flag to flag in picking up his first win of the season at the track. Nick Griest finished second with Dan Wood third, Kenny Underwood, fourth and Austin Welch fifth.
Rick Frisco took home the plaque in the Road Warrior feature event beating Paul Lockwood and Stan Wayman to the checkers.
