Thunder Mountain Speedway 2008

Thunder Mountain speedway management held a Modified team meeting on Sunday, March 23, in Cortland, New York, in hopes of exploring the possibility of keeping the Modified division on its' weekly schedule throughout the 2008 race season. A total of 3 teams ( Don Hart Jr., Chad Cook, Scott Allen), represented by 10 team members were present at the meeting, and 4 other teams that couldn't be there (Scott Brady, Tim Votra, Chris Weaver, Mike McCollum) expressed their interest as well. Over the course of a couple of hours ideas were shared, along with concerns, and it was called to a close, so Dick and Shelly Stark could digest the information, and decide what ultimately would happen this upcoming 2008 race season with the weekly schedule.

After some careful consideration it has been decided that Thunder Mountain Speedway will forego the Modified division on its' weekly schedule in 2008, and concentrate its' efforts on the open motor Sportsman Modifieds, I.M.C.A. Modifieds, Hurricane Street Stocks, Road Warriors w/ Six Shooters, and the popular 4 cylinder Road Bandit division.

Management would like to extend its' appreciation to the Modified teams that took time out of their busy schedules to attend the meeting. Thunder Mountain Speedway will evaluate the situation at the end of the season, leaving the door open for a possible return of the Modifieds in 2009.

At this time Thunder Mountain Speedway would like to also recognize some new people that will be part of the fold in 2008. Sidney, New Yorks' Steve Clapperton will take on the announcing duties this upcoming season, after spending 2007 as the track handicapper. A face familiar with the role of handicapper in the past at Thunder Mountain will step back into that role in 2008. Jason Waibel, who has an extensive background in scoring, as well as handicapping has been tabbed the 2008 track handicapper.

Racing an SST B Modified on Saturday nights at the Chemung Speedrome, Elmiras' "Top Gun" Tim Gullo will spend his Friday nights at Thunder Mountain Speedway as its' new tech inspector. Tim's extensive knowledge of race cars will serve him well in his new capacity. He has raced for the better part of 25 years on both asphalt as well as dirt in several different types of race cars.

It is only 11 days away from Thunder Mountains' first of two test & tune dates on the schedule. Friday April 4th, and Friday April 11th, race teams will converge on the fast 3/8 mile oval to shake down their rides for the upcoming 2008 season. Racers don't have to be Thunder Mountain regulars to bring their race cars to the track on these dates, as it is open to all who are interested in getting some seat time in before opening day.

Any questions on what is happening at Thunder Mountain Speedway can be directed to Dick and Shelly Stark at (607)533-4118 prior to the April 4th date, and after at (607)849-7889. Be sure to keep track of updated information on the track web site as well at www.thunderracetrack.com
